After simply glancing at the PS3 vs Xbox 360 sales figures we can see that the Microsoft Xbox 360 has sold more units than the Sony PlayStation 3. But a major reason for this is that the Xbox 360 was released a good year before the PS3. This inadvertently meant that many people bought the Xbox 360 because they could not wait another year. In my opinion, the PS3 is a far better console and it is the best gaming console 2010, but the head start that the Xbox 360 got has led to its superiority.

This head start also means that there are more game titles available for the Xbox 360 because developers had a full year more to sell these games. These video game consoles are not cheap by any means, and once a person had bought an Xbox 360 and its games, it was unfeasible to spend a similar amount to change over to the PS3 just more than a year after that.

Total sales of Xbox 360 currently stand at around 50 million units, and this includes all the different types of Xbox 360 consoles. On the other hand, worldwide sales of PS3 are around 43 million units. These are approximate figures, and they are from the month of September 2010, and these may have changed considerably by now. Let us see information about PS3 vs Xbox 360 – sales.

Sales of PS3 vs Xbox 360

A PS3 vs Xbox 360 comparison is something that many new buyers carry out, and in this area the PS3 edges out the Xbox 360 easily. The added advantage of the console being a Blu-Ray disc player also helps. Moreover, Xbox Live requires members to pay a certain fee to carry out online gaming, whereas the PlayStation Network can be used free of cost. Though Xbox Live is better, the fact that the rival offers a similar service for free works against it to a certain extent.

When you analyze PS3 vs Xbox 360 – sales it is also necessary to take the major markets into consideration. There are 4 primary markets where these video game consoles are sold, and these are the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Japan. This PS3 vs Xbox 360 sales chart will show you the figures for sales in these specific markets.

As you can see, the UK and Europe and the US prefer the Xbox 360. This is simply because it was released before. Japan, on the other hand, recognizes the value of the PS3 and that is why it comfortably outsells the Xbox 360 there.

Competition and the Future

While Sony and Microsoft were fighting each other, the Nintendo Wii came along and stole a major chunk of the market. Worldwide sales of the Wii are close to 80 million units, and this is because the Wii offered something new with its unique motion sensing controller. They opened up a whole new market of gamers, and exploited this segment very well. Today, Sony has released the Move controller and Microsoft has released the Kinect (where ‘You are the Controller’), and they are looking to tap this market as well.

According to reports, the Sony Move has sold 4.1 million units since its release while the Microsoft Kinect has sold close to 3 million units. This is an inaccurate assessment of the consoles though, since many people are just buying the Move or Kinect packages and are upgrading their consoles, and not buying brand new ones. But these releases have certainly pushed the Nintendo Wii firmly into the background. Also see which is better – PS3 or Xbox 360 and PS3 Vs Xbox 360: Graphics Comparison for more information.

Video games are developing at an alarming rate today, and this market has a lot more potential that is still untapped. The PS3 vs Xbox 360 sales to date figures show that the Xbox 360 is doing better, but this is only because it was released a year earlier. There are many bugs with the Xbox 360 that are still not fixed, and the PS3 also acts as Blu-Ray player. So if you are looking to buy a new console, we suggest you opt for the PS3.

Now that the Ps3 or Xbox 360 have been out a few years, we thought we would see how many years the consoles have left. Obviously its hard to put an accurate figure on the consoles’ lifespans, but we can, however, at least look at some of the many considerations which will affect how long they have left.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was originally launched in 2005 and has now sold over 39 million units (as of January 6th 2010), whereas Sony’s PlayStation 3 originally launched in 2006 and has sold well over 27 million unites (as of September 2009).

According to Microsoft’s senior director of Xbox product management, the Xbox 360 still has a lot to offer, therefore Microsoft is in no rush to release a next-gen console.

Microsoft plans to keep pushing barriers with the Xbox 360 by releasing software and hardware updates for the console, and obviously one major addition will be Project Natal. (In other words, they are going to try to give people more reasons buy the Xbox 360, other than Halo.)

As for the PS3, it is hard to say how it will adapt. I personally think that Sony need to concentrate on their software more than anything else; improving software will unlock the consoles full potential in my opinion. And a new console doesn’t seem all that likely since Sony is already going to be putting out a new PSP console called the NGP.

Personally I would be very surprised if either Sony or Microsoft announces a new console within 18 months, it all depends on just how much these current consoles still have to offer.

Over the last decade or so, the gaming industry has reached new heights, with the major players in the market coming up with some of the most sophisticated video game consoles ever seen. Two of the most popular gaming platforms today – PS3, the latest variant of PlayStation from Sony, and Xbox 360, Microsoft’s successor to Xbox, which are battling it out for the top slot in the world of gaming. PS3 vs Xbox 360 comparison is not at all easy, with both the consoles having their own positives and negatives, but then there are some points wherein each of these consoles have an edge over the other. Before we move on to find out which is better – PS3 or Xbox 360, let’s get some more information about each of them.

PlayStation 3 (PS3)
PlayStation 3, often abbreviated as PS3, is the seventh-generation video game console launched by electronics giant Sony, in 2006. The console was an instant hit among various age groups owing to its high-definition optical disc format, which made gaming even more exciting. PlayStation 3 provided a Blu-Ray disc as a storage medium which simply meant more place to store data. At present, two variants of PS3 are available in the market – the PS3 120 GB Slim and PS3 250 GB Slim. With games like Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, Devil May Cry and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to its credit, PS3 is indeed one of the best gaming consoles you can lay your hands on.

Xbox 360
Xbox 360 is the seventh-generation video game console launched by Microsoft, in 2005. One of the most amazing feature of the Xbox 360 was Xbox Live, which played a crucial role in the tremendous success of the console the world over. Other than online gaming and downloading, Xbox 360 also facilitated TV shows and movie broadcasts. At present, two variants of the Microsoft Xbox 360 – the Arcade and the Elite are available in the market. The rising popularity of the Xbox 360 can also be attributed to the amazing range of games it supports, including Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2 and Resident Evil 5. Read more on Xbox 360 games.

PS3 vs Xbox 360 Comparison

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 are seventh-generation video game consoles, and hence have a lot of similar features. However, there do exist some points of difference between PS3 and Xbox 360, which can make the comparison a bit easier.

GPU and CPU Comparison
GPU, i.e. the graphics processing unit, and CPU, i.e. the central processing unit, are important components of the video game console. The Xenos GPU in Xbox 360 does have an edge over the RSX GPU in PS3, but then the Cell engine (microprocessor chip) in PS3, which is more powerful than the triple-core Xenon CPU in Xbox 360, comes to the rescue of PS3 by handling the workload at any given point of time.

Storage Comparison
PS3 uses a Blu-ray Disk as the primary storage medium, while Xbox 360 uses double layer DVDs as the primary storage medium. In PS3, armed with the Blu-ray Disk, approximately 54 gigs of data can be stored, while the same amounts to only 9 gigs in Xbox 360′s double layer DVDs. This gives PS3 a thumbs up in terms of storage capacity, which is quite important as both the consoles offer game downloads.

Price Comparison
Price is indeed one of the deciding factors when it comes to PS3 vs Xbox 360 comparison. In case of Xbox 360, the Arcade version, sans the HDD, is priced at USD 199.99, making it the most inexpensive Xbox 360 console of the lot. If you are ready to shell out some more money, you can always opt for Xbox 360 Elite, which is the higher end version of Xbox 360 console. It has two variants – Xbox 360 Elite with 120 GB HDD, priced at USD 299.99, and Xbox 360 Elite with 250 GB HDD, priced at USD 399.99. On the other hand, PS3 also has two models based on the storage capacity. PS3 120 GB Slim is priced at USD 300, while PS3 250 GB Slim is priced at USD 400, which is almost similar to the price of Xbox 360 Elite models.

Online Gaming
Microsoft charges a stipulated monthly fee for online gaming, while PS3 offers online gaming for free. This means that the PS3, which is a bit costlier than Xbox 360 in terms of market price, is actually a better bet in the long term. This is one of the most important aspect of PS3 which tends to give it an edge in the PS3 and Xbox 360 comparison.

At the end of the day, it becomes quite difficult to determine which is better, PS3 or Xbox 360, as both have their own positives and negatives. In such circumstances, the winner of PS3 vs Xbox 360 battle can be only decided by you, based on your personal preferences. We do believe that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has a slight edge over Sony’s PS3, but PS3 has its own positives, owing to which it has such a tremendous fan following.
